2007 Cape May County Tourism Conference
Freeholder Leonard C. Desiderio and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders hosted the annual Tourism Conference on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at the County Administration Building. This year’s focus was “The Economic Engines That Drive Cape May County’s Largest Industry.”

5369 Registration began at 9:30 and the conference ran from 10 a.m. until after noon.

5372 Senator Nicholas Asselta and Assemblyman Nelson Albano Senator Nicholas Asselta stressed the importance of adequate funding for tourism marketing and promotion through the State of New Jersey’s Occupancy tax. Assemblyman Nelson Albano gave an update on the Assembly Gaming and Tourism Committee and also emphasized the importance of tourism to the economy of Cape May County as well as to the State of New Jersey.

5373 Freeholder Leonard Desiderio, who oversees the County’s Tourism Department, presented updated information about Cape May County’s $4.85 billion tourism industry.

5371 Vince Grimm and Susan Jones Vince Grimm, has been Executive Director of GABLES of Cape May County for the past eight years, Grimm has served on the boards of several other county and state organizations and is responsible for conceiving the successful Rainbow Directory for New Jersey, a directory of businesses and organizations serving the New Jersey Gay community and is the current editor. Susan K. Jones – Atlantic Cape Community College Sue’s career in the Hospitality Industry includes management in the casino/hotel industry and the human resources area. During her career she has presented hundreds of training seminars for management and line employees. Many of these programs focused on hiring the best person for the job, customer service issues and developing employee’s skills. Sue has been a panelist for the New Jersey Governor’s Conference and works with local Chambers of Commerce and the Atlantic City Hotel and Lodging Association.

5375 Dr. Perniciero and John Siciliano Richard C. Perniciaro, PH.D, Director Center for Regional and Business Research. Dr. Perniciaro has been active in economic development in southern New Jersey for the past twenty years. He serves as Dean of Administration, Planning and Research at Atlantic Cape Community College as well as Director of the Center for Regional and Business Research which performs economic, marketing and demographic studies for public agencies and private businesses. Dr. Richard Perniciaro presented and explained the results of the county’s tourism survey. John Siciliano, Executive Director of GWTIDA is a graduate of Drexel University’ School of Business. He received a Bachelor’s of Science Major in Accounting and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Jersey. The regional impact of the Wildwoods Convention Center was outlined by John.

5376 “Tourism generated almost 5 billion dollars in Cape May County last year representing over 64% of the county’s economy. That reflects the most dependency on tourism than any other county in the state and certainly emphasizes its critical importance to the vitality of our county,” said Desiderio.

5377 Desiderio concluded, “Cape May County is doing well in the tourism industry. And as we continue to work with our neighboring counties - we can expect to see even stronger growth."

5379 Cape May County Director of Tourism Diane Wieland gave an overview of the Occupancy tax and its impact on tourism.

5381 Cape May County also leads the state in ‘second home’ ownership. Of the 91,000 housing units in Cape May County, more than 47 % are considered seasonal second homes.

5383 Cape May County’s tourism expenditures grew 9.3 % and generated $4.85 billion in 2006. Cape May County continues to rank second in the State in tourism spending, with Atlantic County coming in first.

5385 Highlighting more diverse attractions – especially in the growing ecotourism market – we are increasing the popularity and attraction of South Jersey as a regional destination.
