Contact: Rita Marie Fulginiti, County Clerk coclerk@co.cape-may.nj.us
On Friday, May 1, 2009 the Cape May County Clerk’s Office held a “May Day” exercise. “A May Day exercise is a day when archivists take personal and professional responsibility for accomplishing something which can be done in a day but will have a significant impact on a repository’s ability to respond to a disaster,” explained County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti. “Protecting records collections is one of the fundamental responsibilities for archivists.”
County Clerk Archivist Diana L. Hevener explained that soon after hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma struck the Gulf Coast it was reported that few institutions had disaster plans, and those that did, had plans that were out of date.

Fulginiti, pictured here with Supervising Clerk Deborah Greene updated the Disaster Preparedness Plan for the County Clerk’s Office and Archives making current the names and contact information of emergency response team members.
The County Clerk’s Office participates in a May Day exercise each year. May Day is promoted nationally by the Society of American Archivists www.archivists.org. Fulginiti and Hevener reviewed the guidelines promulgated by the Heritage Emergency National Task Force on their website www.heritagepreservation.org.
The County Clerk’s Office maintains a collection of public records relating to property and civil matters dating back to the 1690’s. “It is our responsibility to protect these archival treasures of Cape May County.” Fulginiti said.
