TOURISM HOMEPAGE

2003 Tourism Conference will focus on new ways to market tourism product.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. – “Finding new ways to market your tourism product” will be the focus of the 2003 Cape May County Tourism Conference set for Oct. 23 at the County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road in Cape May County’s Crest Haven Complex.  Legislators will provide attendees with a government update on the status of tourism at the annual conference sponsored by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Nationally-renown speaker, Dr. Peter Tarlow, president of Tourism & More Inc., will serve as keynote speaker.  Tarlow is a sociologist specializing in tourism and economic development.  A member of the Distance Learning Faculty of George Washington University in Washington, D.C, he is also an adjunct faculty member of Colorado State University.  He designed and taught a groundbreaking course on the “sociology of tourism” and a course in tourism, crime and security.  Tarlow lectures at numerous universities, conferences international meetings on tourism, and its economic and sociological impact.  He has appeared on nationally televised programs such as Dateline NBC and CNBC.  Tarlow writes and publishes “Tourism Tidbits,” an electronic newsletter on tourism and travel.  Tidbits is read monthly by thousands of tourism and travel professionals around the world.

A government update on the status of tourism is scheduled with Congressman Frank LoBiondo, Assemblyman Nicholas Asselta, Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel and Freeholder Leonard Desiderio.

Diane Wieland, Director of Cape May County Department of Tourism, will provide participants with the most up-to-date research in a booklet for all attendees.  Cape May and Atlantic counties continue to hold first and second place in total tourism dollars generated from 21 counties in New Jersey.  Between the two regions, $12.7 billion is generated, representing 41 percent of the total tourism dollars raised in the entire state.

“The annual conference on tourism allows our department to share qualified research and information with the county’s businesses and tourism officials,” said Wieland. “This a chance to show our mom-and-pop businesses and non-profit organizations that local government has resources and marketing tools available for use at their business offices,” she added.

The conference is free-of-charge and open to the public.
