Update on Swine Flu Investigation – Revised May 1, 2009
The CDC has confirmed cases of swine origin influenza A (H1N1) infection in the United States, including several cases in New Jersey. The US cases have been generally mild. As of May 1, 2009 there are no confirmed cases in Cape May County.
The Cape May County Department of Health is working with healthcare partners to promptly identify any suspected cases of H1N1 flu and to investigate any clusters of infection. The symptoms of H1N1 flu are typical of seasonal influenza – fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and muscle aches. Some people may also experience vomiting and diarrhea.
The transmission of the H1N1 flu virus is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may also become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, you should call your physician who can determine if treatment is necessary. If you are experiencing signs of severe illness you should seek urgent medical care.
The CDC recommends the use of two antiviral medications, Oseltamivir and Zanamivir to treat and prevent infection with H1N1 flu. The CDC is also working to develop a specific vaccine.
