Parrots are generally characterized by their strong curved beak, an upright stance with strong legs are clawed zygodactyl feet. (Zygodactyl is a type of toe arrangment with 2 toes facing forward and two toes facing backwards) Parrots are prized for the their intelligence and some parrots ability to copy human voices have increased their popularity in the pet trade.


Family: Psittacidae
This family consists of the true parrots. There are about 330 different species covering a wide spread area that includes the America, Africa, Asia, Australia and as far east as Polynesia.

Scarlet Macaw
Scarlet Macaw (Ara maco) are well known in the pet trade. There are more females than males in captivity. 
 


Family: Cacatuidae

 This family consists of cockatoos. The smallest of which is the cockatiel.
