Feral cats are cats that have been lost and then learned to live in the wild or cats born in the wild. Generally suspicious of humans, they will rarely approach you.  Do not attempt to touch a feral animal.  Even cute little kittens can give you a nasty bite, especially when cornered or frightened. In many communities people have loosely banded together to care for these animals.  Many of the cats you see are part of trap-neuter-vaccinate-release (TNVR) programs.  In some towns feeding feral cats is against the law.  Animal Control can address your concerns about any strays.    Several organizations throughout the US have been successful in reducing the number of homeless cats and treating them humanely. If you are interested in their work, check out the following web sites.
