INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE OF THE COMMISSION

The ultimate goal of the County Women’s Commission is to enhance the quality of life and position of the women and girls in Cape May County.


WHO WE ARE
The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders created the Advisory Commission on the Status of Women on December 11, 1984.

Currently, Cape May County Freeholder Ralph E. Bakley, Sr. serves as liaison to the Commission.

The members of the Commission represent various segments of the County's population.


WHERE AND WHEN WE MEET
The Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Old Court House Building, 11 North Main Street, Cape May Court House.

The public is invited to attend all the meetings of the Commission and to express their concerns for the needs of women and girls in Cape May County.


HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE
All county residents are invited to participate and volunteer in Commission activities.

The Commission sponsors special events and facilitates various workshops and seminars throughout the year that are advertised.

We encourage all county women and girls to advise us of their needs and interests by attending our meetings.  Also, we welcome your ideas for future programs.

 
RULES and PROCEDURES

The Cape May County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women has prescribed Rules and Procedures that all members of the Board must abide by.

During any given year, the Commission may find a need to amend the Rules and Procedures. In order to justify such a procedure, the proposed amendment(s) must be discussed with, and approved by, at least a quorum of the members. Once the members are in agreement, the existing document containing the proposed amendment(s) is submitted to the County Board of Chosen Freeholders for their review.

Upon receipt of the Freeholders' approval, a final revised document is prepared, and sent to the Freeholders for signature. When the final document is signed and dated, the Clerk/Administrator of the Board of Chosen Freeholders prepares a Resolution that is signed and dated signifying the revisions are accepted as written. A transmittal letter, the Resolution, and a signed and dated copy of the revised Rules and Procedures are sent to the Commission for its files.

COMMISSION COMMITTEES

Rules and procedures of the Women’s Commission call for each Commission member to serve on two committees, (or serve on one committee and be an officer of the Commission).  There are two Management Committees - Budget and Nominating and three Program Committees - Education, Outreach/Public Relations, and Awards and Recognition.

Education Committee

The Education Committee along with other members assist with the exhibits and attend a variety of meetings, conferences and special events on a regular basis communicating with Cape May County women. 

Copies of a written report from the chair of the Education Committee are circulated at the Commission meetings. Committee members are invited to provide further details and answer any questions, which may result from the report.

Outreach/Public Relations

Communication

The Commission created a survey to address the Concerns and Interests of Cape May County women.

Focus Groups

In 2000 we established a Focus Project, which was intended to survey women in Cape May County. This undertaking was initiated to determine and prioritize women’s concerns and interests. One of the results of the first year was streamlining and coordinating the outcome into a database and forming a conclusion. From this survey it was noted that this list includes Educational Resources; Exercise and Nutrition; Stress Management; Finances/Budget Investments; and Parenting. However, the main concern was public transportation, implying that women are moving from welfare to the workplace and showing increased interest in furthering education towards a new career.

We invite guest speakers to monthly meetings.  These speakers provide information to the Commission about issues and resources in the community that we can then relay to the public.  Guest Speakers and their topics have included:

• Susan Zimmerman of DYFS - Foster Care Issues
• Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape May County
• Tina Bumpkus of Cara - Rising Domestic Violence
