REMEMBER:

9-1-1 is for EMERGENCIES
only

            When you call 9-1-1
                 Stay Calm and Speak Clearly
Stay on line and follow instructions

Teach your children and everyone else at home to use 9-1-1 .

Make sure the telephone company has your correct address before
                 an emergency strikes.

9-1-1 is the universal emergency telephone number that you can dial 24 hours a day for police, fire or medical emergencies.

WHAT  HAPPENS WHEN I CALL 9-1-1  ?

Your 9-1-1 call is routed over special telephone lines to a 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) where trained emergency response personnel will determine the type of emergency service needed. Your town determines which PSAP will handle your call.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T STAY ONLINE ?

A 9-1-1 caller should give his or her location, and other important information to PSAP personnel. Sometimes a caller is unable to do this.  However, the caller's telephone number and associated address will appear on a screen in front of the attendant.  The attendant may try to re-establish the call or may have to dispatch an emergency service to the address displayed on the screen.

HOW CAN I MAKE SURE EMERGENCY HELP CAN FIND ME ?

The address you have given Verizon when you ordered your telephone service is the address that is used by the 9-1-1 System.  Sometimes our customers forget to give us the address of their physical location in addition  to their mailing address when they are not the same.  The telephone company record must have the correct name of the town in which you live and to which you pay taxes in order for 9-1-1 to work quickly and accurately for you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT HAVE THE UNIQUE ADDRESS FOR THE PHYSICAL LOCATION OF MY PHONE ?

A unique identifiable address will make sure that you get the right kind of emergency help as fast as possible.  If you do not have a house number or a street name, call your town and ask for one. Then make sure you report it too Verizon by calling your business office.

WHAT DO I DO IF MY ADDRESS CHANGES ?

In many parts of the state, towns are assigning new addresses to eliminate any possible confusion in case of an emergency.  You must inform Verizon so that it will appear on your record.

WHO SHOULD KNOW ABOUT 9-1-1  ?

It is important that everyone in the family knows about the 9-1-1 Service.  This may be especially important for the children and elderly living in your home.  If an emergency occurs and there are no adults able to assist, your child's ability to dial 9-1-1 could save their life and that of the other family members.
