The Species Survival Plan (SSP) program was established by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to ensure the survival of particular species. This program includes a number of species, generally threatened or endangered, which are considered in jeopardy of extinction. With the cooperation of member institutions and supporting agencies, the AZA manages research information to establish organized breeding programs and develop conservation strategies for captive and wild populations. This program also focuses on re-introduction of captive-bred wildlife to wild habitats when necessary and appropriate.
For more information about the Cape May County Zoo’s participation in SSP programs, please visit the Bongo Project page.
