A brief history of the Official Seal of the County
of Cape May, New Jersey
Since the early 1990s, the 1927 casting has resided in the wall of the Freeholders' Meeting Room behind the dais. Additionally, three high relief copies which were carved and gilded by Martin McNulty are in the lobby of the County Administration Building, on the outside of the Cape May County Health Department Building and at the Office of Emergency Management located in the Cape May Court House branch of the Cape May County Library.
Historic documents indicate that Jeremiah Leaming procured the original seal of the County in 1838 and a second seal was approved and adopted by the Board of Chosen Freeholders on February 1, 1872.
Depicted on this page is an enhanced drawing of the Official Seal of the County of Cape May adopted by the Board of Chosen Freeholders on March 16, 1927. This Seal, the third seal according to records, was cast and installed in the floor of the then new Cape May County Court House (now the Historic Court House).
