Effective February 19, 2002 the state of New Jersey implemented statewide rules, N.J.A.C. 8:27, known as Body Art Procedures, Chapter VIII, State Sanitary Code. This Chapter establishes standards for persons engaged in the business of tattoing, permanent cosmetics and body piercing in order to protect the public's health. This regulation provides procedures for sanitation, facility layout, lighting, medical waste disposal, client record keeping, hand washing, sterilization, disinfection standards, and training requirements.

This department conducts unannounced inspections of each regulated facility.

Anyone desiring to open a body art shop should call the Cape May County Health Department at the above number to find out the requirements.
