Significant changes mandated by the federal government through the Department of Homeland Security require that government issued identification cards meet heightened security requirements or carry a disclaimer that they may not be used for official purposes. Since the County Clerk began issuing identification cards in 2003 citizens have utilized them as personal ID for a variety of purposes including the boarding of commercial aircraft for domestic flights. Under the Real ID guidelines our cards will no longer be accepted for boarding commercial aircraft or for entering federal facilities. The decision to cease issuance of these ID cards is to help our citizens avoid delays and inconvenience when traveling or entering federal facilities.
