Cape May Court House – Exciting Opportunity to Improve the Health of Our Community

The Cape May County Department of Health has been working with community members and organizations.  We are promoting healthy programs and behaviors related to the needs of older adults and children, persons needing assistance with tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse, persons with behavioral health concerns, and issues related to housing and linking the public to the appropriate agency or program for assistance.  Through the collaboration with Mobilization for Action through Planning and Partnership (MAPP) workgroups, the Cape May County Public Health Community Resource Directory has been created and is being distributed throughout Cape May County.  The directory contains a comprehensive listing of organizations and programs available to Cape May County residents and visitors who are in need of assistance.

If you are interested in having a hard copy of the directory please visit the Cape May County Department of Health, any county library, municipal halls, chamber of commerce, and many other public access locations throughout Cape May County to pick up a copy.  You can also call Community Health Planning at the Cape May County Department of Health for assistance or questions about the directory at 609-463-6689.

Health Officer Kevin Thomas asks that anyone interested in participating on a public health work group should contact the Department of Health at 463-6689. New members are welcome to participate on any of the committees and include: (1) needs of the older population; (2) children’s health and well-being; (3) tobacco, alcohol, and drugs; (4) behavioral health; (5) transportation; and (6) adequacy of housing.

The Cape May County Department of Health has completed the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) and it was submitted to the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) in April 2007.  Please see below for more information on the MAPP process.

What is MAPP?

The Cape May County Department of Health, along with community partners and other health professionals completed the first five (5) phases of the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) process.  The MAPP tool is used to help communities improve the health and quality of life through community-wide and community-driven strategic planning.  MAPP allows the community to develop and implement a strategic plan for public health improvement.  MAPP focuses on strengthening the whole local public health system rather than separate pieces bringing together diverse interests to collaboratively determine the most effective way to conduct public health activities.

The MAPP process includes six (6) phases each with a unique opportunity to establish who is and should be involved in public health.  The first phase, Organize for Success/Partnership Development, included a review of the groups in the county where we had established relationships and needed to develop and create new relationships.  The second phase, Visioning, established a shared vision and common values for pursuing long-range community goals.  The third phase, MAPP Assessments, included conducting assessments and meetings with community partners and health professionals.  The fourth phase, Identify Strategic Issues, allowed the community partners and health professionals to determine which issues were critical to the success of the local public health system and its vision of improved community health.  The fifth phase, Formulate Goals and Strategies, provided a forum to develop goals and strategies for each of the strategic issues.  The MAPP Steering Committee identified the following six strategic issues: (1) Tobacco, drug and alcohol use, (2) Needs of the older adult population, (3) Adequacy of Housing within the County, (4) Transportation barriers, (5) Mental health issues, and (6) Children’s health & well-being.  Then, a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) was drafted from the strategic issues.  The 6th phase of the process is the Action Cycle which we are in right now.  In this phase the workgroups created the Cape May County Public Health Community Resource Directory. Please look over the Directory and utilize it for the benefit of yourself, your family, and your friends.  We hope it will be useful for everyone.
