Cape May County currently has the distinction of being the leading county in Southern New Jersey for having the highest percentage ratio of trained volunteers in relation to its Census Bureau population in this Volunteer Citizens Corps program.

At present there are ten Cape May County municipalities that have a county sponsored CERT Team.

The following communities have Cape May County sponsored CERT Teams:
Avalon, Cape May City, Cape May Point, Lower Township, Middle Township, North Wildwood, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, West Cape May, Wildwood, and Woodbine

The State of New Jersey Office of Emergency Management has awarded fully equipped CERT Trailers via Citizen Volunteer Corps grants to the County of Cape May, the Borough of Avalon and the Township of Lower.

The number of CERT volunteers exceeds three hundred.

The training curriculum consists of:

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

FIRE SAFETY

DISASTER MEDICAL PREPAREDNESS

LIGHT SEARCH AND RESCUE

CERT ORGANIZATION

DISASTER PSYCHOLOGY

TERRORISM AWARENESS

POLICE ACTION

Classes are conducted at the Cape May County Emergency Management Communications Center; or, in the municipality that is sponsoring the training.

There is no cost to the students and our professional instructors, who volunteer their time, ensure the best curriculum is offered to the students.

Each volunteer must be at lease 18 years of age.

At the conclusion of the training classes, students will receive an Emergency Response Kit that contains equipment, personal gear and useful tools for use in an emergency.

After graduation there is an ongoing program that allows students to become proficient in Amateur Radio Communication, Family Radio Service, Red Cross Sheltering Programs, CPR and AED Training.

To take part in this important and helpful training, please contact Ed Taylor, Program Manager at 609.463.6570.
