AGRICULTURE IN CAPE MAY COUNTY The commercial agricultural and horticultural industries assume a vital role in the retention of the 10,000 acres of agricultural open space in Cape May County. Cape May County is the only county in the state that reported an increase in the number of farms in the last census of Agriculture (2002). Professional education in commercial agriculture and horticulture is the central focus of the Agricultural and Resource Management Program (ARMA) at Rutgers Cooperative Extension. With the advent of current technologies in agricultural production (biotechnology, next-generation pesticides, advanced nutrient and water management, etc.), the timely demand for research-based information by growers has quickly increased. The ARMA Program continues to aggressively expand the delivery of information to include traditional on-site grower consultations (the stalwart of the program), offering pesticide safety classes granting NJDEP pesticide recertification credits in Cape May Court House. In addition to serving commercial clientele, the ARMA program continues to respond to the needs of the consumers of Cape May County through the Master Gardener course and the in-house plant diagnostic clinic and helpline.
